Baseboard Heat
Baseboard Heat for Room Additions
Baseboard heaters are great heating solutions for the
home. Ideally, they are best for individual rooms including room additions such as those that need only supplemental heating like the
basement. This
type of heating system has several advantages which homeowners should be happy about.
Baseboard heaters need only minimal space because no ductwork is involved. These are easily installed and some of them don’t even entail mounting if the homeowner does not wish to. Baseboard heaters are, therefore, perfect for bedrooms, frequently-occupied offices and closed rooms because only the individual rooms are provided with warm air and not the entire house. This then results in lower energy consumption.
Convection is the method by which baseboard heaters circulate the warm air in a room. While the warm air from the baseboard heater rises, the cold air is then pushed down to the bottom of the room. The process is repeated until the thermostat achieves its set temperature.
A major advantage of this heating system is it emits no noise when in use. Baseboard heaters are quiet as they provide heat to the room by way of convection, meaning it does not use a fan. Also, no burning takes place hence no toxic fumes or other harmful elements are released.
Being a simple system, baseboard heaters require low maintenance. With the absence of moving parts inside the heater, it’s very easy to maintain. It only needs minor cleaning such as getting rid of the dust and lint from the heater’s grill.
Baseboard heaters are very safe to use. In the case of electric baseboard heaters, its auto safety thermal cutout function will automatically turn off the system if overheat occurs and once the heater goes back to its normal temperatures, the safety feature will reactive the system right away. They should also be UL approved.
This heating system’s other advantage is its zone control. In other words, you can control the temperature in each room through the thermostat according to your preference and you can just turn it off when not in use. Thermostats are either wall or unit mounted. This zone control feature is the reason why baseboard heating is commonly used in apartments or retirement homes.
Baseboard heaters are available in varying lengths so they can be used in all room sizes even those with odd shapes. Unit lengths range from three to 10 feet and are only about three inches from the wall. They also come in neutral colors to suit your home’s decorating plan. If ever you want to change your home’s color theme in the future, you can always repaint your unit. You can be assured as well that your walls won’t get discolored because baseboard heaters have only low operating temperatures.
But apart from all those features and benefits, homeowners should keep in mind that insulation remains a very important consideration in the home. Insulation is critical in keeping the heat in all areas of the home. If your goal is to achieve energy efficiency in using your baseboard heating system, then you should do everything to maintain the proper insulation in your home.
